THE TREATMENT PROCESS

  • Firstly, a full history of the animal will be taken to identify and highlight likely problems and to ensure that the animal would benefit from a McTimoney treatment or an Equine Masssage.
  • Your animal will be assessed at both walk, trot and on tight circles to look for gait abnormalities, asymmetries and stiffness. The assessment will show how the animal uses its body and highlight potential problem areas.
  • The animals' musculoskeletal system will be palpated by hand assessing muscle tone, muscle spasm and any skeletal misalignments.

  • From identifying the misalignments, McTimoney techniques of rapid precise hand adjustments are applied to the necessary misaligned joints to release muscle spasm and allow the joint to move back towards its normal position without forcing or stressing the joint or body.

  •  For a massage treatment different strokes are applied to the relevant muscles.

  • Aftercare may involve rest or limited exercise for a few days following a McTimoney treatment, however following a massage exercise is recommended. An exercise plan will be given to you to get the most out of the treatment. The animal may require several treatments, depending on the nature of the condition, although most problems are resolved within a couple of sessions.

How long does a treatment take?

For a McTimoney treatment the process takes approx 1 hour for the initial treatment for the horse and 30-45 minutes for a follow up treatment. The initial treatment for the dog is approx 45 minutes and 30 minutes for follow up treatments.

For an equine sports massage treatment it can take up to 2 -2 ½ hours for more complex cases. The time taken depends on the severity of problems and if the animal has had a treatment before. Treatments are never rushed and will be taken at your animals pace.
